He was born in a remote village of Karnataka. A protégé of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who is regarded as the father of India’s space program, Rao began his career as a cosmic-ray physicist. After working in the US as a professor and conducting experiments on NASA’s Pioneer and Explorer space probes, he returned to India.

He is the man who supervised the launch of India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975. In fact, he developed 20 satellites that transformed much of rural India by advancing communication and meteorological services.
