Google Doodle celebrates birth anniversary of scientist Udupi Ramachandra Rao

Udupi Ramachandra Rao, known as ‘India’s Satellite Man’, passed away in 2017. Today, Google celebrated his 89th birth anniversary.
Google today, on March 10, shared a doodle to celebrate 89th birth anniversary of renowned Indian professor and scientist Udupi Ramachandra Rao. Known as ‘India’s Satellite Man’, Rao passed away in 2017 due to age-related ailments.

Taking to their official Twitter profile, Google shared an animated GIF featuring the man who “propelled India’s space program to dizzying heights.” Their post is complete with a link of a blog which detail Rao’s personal life and professional achievements.

He was born in a remote village of Karnataka. A protégé of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who is regarded as the father of India’s space program, Rao began his career as a cosmic-ray physicist. After working in the US as a professor and conducting experiments on NASA’s Pioneer and Explorer space probes, he returned to India.

He is the man who supervised the launch of India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975. In fact, he developed 20 satellites that transformed much of rural India by advancing communication and meteorological services.

The eminent scientist was conferred a Padma Vibhusha in 2017.
