We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought
to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the
noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm
and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we
would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp
as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline,
raises them to the sublime. Only the price,
at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few
better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.

But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.

two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The
Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second
weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s
made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place
in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal
and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out
the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White
Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000
locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to
say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control
of DC two months before production began on Joker 2
in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening
for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them,
this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and
was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around
20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static. 

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with
an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety
he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James
Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last
month

 A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the
film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with
a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history
as the film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as
‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters
on Friday, October 4, but it only raked in $20
million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar
for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga
took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D
rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score
for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score
with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds
an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic
box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per
The Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a
little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips
– had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À
Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences –
and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker
(Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International
Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any
thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is
best remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as
bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars
but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although
Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel,
Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw
claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

MYKOLAIV, Ukraine, March 29 (Reuters) – A Russian rocket
hit the regional administration building in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv on Tuesday, trapping 11 people under the rubble, the
local governor Vitaliy Kim said.

An image showed a large hole in the side of the building.
On Tuesday, Reuters witnesses saw the destruction from a distance and ambulances and fire engines heading to the scene.
The area was cordoned off by Ukrainian authorities.

Russian forces have attacked Ukraine’s southern ports including Kherson, Odesa,
Mykolaiv and Mariupol as they try to cut Ukraine off from the Black Sea and establish a
land corridor from Russia to Crimea, the peninsula Russia seized in 2014.

“They destroyed half of the building, got into my office,” Kim said.

“The entire supply of IQOS (electronic cigarettes) was lost.”

“Most (people) miraculously escaped – eight civilians are now under the rubble and we hope that (they) will be pulled out,” he said, adding three military personnel were also trapped.

Kim said there was an upside to the strike – it suggested Russia had given up trying to take over the city.

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation” to disarm and “denazify” its neighbour.
It denies targeting civilians. Ukraine and the West say Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an unprovoked war.

A swanky London steakhouse is facing backlash over its introduction of charges
for tablecloths and napkins.

Diners at the London Steakhouse restaurant, which
was opened by celebrity chef Marco Pierre White in 2008, are now expected
to fork out an additional cover of £1.50
per person.

The restaurant, located near Liverpool Street train station, has stated that this will be a fixed fee ‘to cover the cost of table linen and napkins’,
with a discretionary service charge of 9.5 per cent also appearing on bills.

Industry experts have cautioned though that this could be just the
start of restaurants seeking more ‘innovative’ ways to raise
additional revenue from customers.

Off the back of the government’s autumn budget which saw both the minimum wage and national insurance rates increase,
restauranteurs have been warning that prices must rise for them to be able to foot the bill.

From April, the national minimum wage will increase by
6.7 per cent to £12.21 per hour, with employer’s NI charges to jump by 1.2 per cent. 

Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch has previously claimed the national minimum wage is detrimental to British businesses, and
told this year’s Tory conference that it was ‘over-burdening’ many small enterprises.

The London Steakhouse appears to be reacting
proactively to its impending expenditure increases, through both the tablecloth
and napkin fee along with a host of other charges.

The charges for the linen are displayed on the restaurant’s à la carte menu, with the set menus seeing additional charges such as a £1
head cover fee.

A 12.5 per cent service charge is also added to
set menu bills, as the self-proclaimed ‘linen-topped table dining’ establishment seemingly seeks more
ways to charge patrons.

The cover charge concept is one which is standard practice in many places around Europe, particularly in Italy where the ‘coperto’ charge covers table
linen and bread.

Cover charges are becoming ever more prevalent in the UK, with Harrdos also recently
jumping on the trend and implementing a £1 levy at its London eateries.

Other charges laid out on the London Steakhouse’s website
include a £10 fee for booking certain set menus over two days in advance.

This fee is not considered as a deposit by the restaurant and is
not credited from your final bill, but rather a charge simply
allowing you to make your reservation. 

Consumer specialist Jane Hawkes told the Telegraph that the introduction of such
fees is unfair on diners and that customers should be made to
feel valued by businesses, rather than ‘bamboozled’.

One potential unintended consequence of these fee
introductions is that patrons will feel less obliged to pay service charges or leave behind tips.

Despite new legislation coming into effect in October which ensures staff receive
equal distribution of tips, industry expert Ms Hawkes says that this may prove to be redundant if fee
gouging persists. 

The London Steakhouse restaurant has been approached by the MailOnline for comment.

At least 14 people have been killed by a major earthquake in Vanuatu, with the full extent of the damage still not clear.

At lunchtime on Tuesday, a 7.3 magnitude tremor rattled nearby Port Vila for
30 seconds, causing destruction in the capital.

Katie Greenwood, the Red Cross’ Pacific head, said the
Vanuatu government had confirmed a death toll of 14 and hundreds
of injuries.

Footage and photos broadcast by local outlet VBTC and on social media
lays bare the devastation in Port Vila.

A building housing the US, UK, French and New Zealand diplomatic posts was among the worst hit,

In a VBTC broadcast, caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai issued a
state of emergency for seven days, and instituted a curfew –
except for essential services – from 6pm to 6am.

Telecommunications failures after the earthquake have made confirming the scale of
the harm and damage difficult.

Those that were able to communicate with the outside world
were largely able to do so through Starlink, including journalist Dan McGarry.

“I know of one fatality according to police stationed at Port Vila Central Hospital, and I saw with my own eyes three others on gurneys … I’m expecting the casualty figure to rise,” he told AAP about three hours after the earthquake.

Mr McGarry has documented landslips around the capital, including a major blockage of a key road near the country’s chief international
port, in addition to destruction of buildings.

Many photos on social media show collapsed buildings, one which has crumpled
cars underneath.

“People died and many more were hurt. Some have lost their home, and many will find it hard to get back to work. Repairs will likely stretch for years, as they always do in the wake of disaster,” Mr
McGarry posted on X.

“But people are pulling together as only Vanuatu knows how. We will get through this. We always do.”

More than 80 islands make up Vanuatu, and it is also unclear how the 350,000-strong population is faring in towns and
settlements outside the capital.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the disaster a “dreadful tragedy,”
and with acting Pacific Minister Matt Keogh,
said Australia would be rushing to its neighbour’s aid.

“Australia stands with the people of Vanuatu … we are family and we will always be there in times of need,” the pair said in a
statement.

“The Australian government is preparing to deploy immediate assistance … including urban search and rescue and emergency medical teams.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to
provide further assistance to the people of Vanuatu as the extent of damage becomes clear.”

Mr Jeangene Vilmer said France was working with Australia and New Zealand to co-ordinate the disaster response.

New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters said a military surveillance plane would fly over Vanuatu on Wednesday to assess damage, with further support to follow when the airport opened.

The disaster has also occurred at a moment of political turmoil in the Melanesian country.

Mr Salwai dissolved parliament last month, setting the stage for a snap election on January 14, only for opposition MPs to mount a constitutional challenge to the move.

While a first case was dismissed by the Supreme Court last week, former prime minister Ishmael Kalsakau announced they are appealing that judgment – which was due to be heard before Christmas.
