मध्यप्रदेश में जल्द ही नई किसान योजना बनाई जाएगी। इसके बाद किसानों को जगह-जगह भटकने की जरूरत नहीं होगी। प्रधानमंत्री से बात कर सभी तरह की सब्सिडी सीधे किसान के खाते में पहुंचाने का अनुरोध करूंगा। यह बात शनिवार को मुख्यमंत्री शिवराज सिंह चौहान ने सीएम किसान कल्याण योजना का शुभारंभ करते हुए कही। उन्होंने कहा कि कोई भी किसान अपनी मर्जी से अब अपनी फसल कहीं भी बेच सकता है। उसे मंडी में ट्रैक्टर तक ले जाने की जरूरत नहीं है। अगर उसे कहीं उचित दाम नहीं मिल रहा है तो सरकार उसकी फसल खरीद ही रही है। प्रधानमंत्री ने किसान को उनका हक दिया है। ऐसे में दूसरे लोगों को तकलीफ क्या हो रही है। यह तकलीफ इसलिए है क्योंकि किसानों को आत्मनिर्भर नहीं होना दिया जाना चाहते हैं। 77 लाख किसानों को लाभ मिलेगा शिवराज ने भोपाल के मिंटो हॉल में आयोजित कार्यक्रम में मुख्यमंत्री कल्याण योजना के तहत किसानों के खाते में ऑनलाइन रुपए जमा किए। 77 लाख किसानों को इसका लाभ मिलेगा। शुक्रवार को भी 5 लाख से ज्यादा किसानों के खाते में पैसे गया। इस दौरान उन्होंने किसानों से भी बात की। भोपाल के किसान से बात की सीएम ने भोपाल के परवलिया के किसान राधेश्याम से पीएम किसान योजना के बारे में पूछा। राधेश्याम ने कहा कि उनके पास तीन एकड़ जमीन है।
प्रधानमंत्री के 6 हजार और सीएम से 4 हजार मिलने से बड़ी मदद मिलेगी। अब बीच में जरूरत होने पर किसी के पास नहीं जाना पड़ेगा। सीएम ने बताया कि पीएम की तरफ से तीन किस्त में यह रुपए किसानों के खाते में जाएंगे। सीएम की तरफ से दो-दो हजार रुपए की दो किस्त जाएंगी। नए बिल से किसानों को लाभ होगा। सीमांक एप का शुभारंभ किसान के लिए सीमांक एप का शुभारंभ किया गया। इसमें किसानों की जमीन से संबंधी सभी जानकारियां शामिल हैं। सभी किसानों को जमीन से जुड़ी जानकारी एक एप के जरिए प्राप्त हो सकेगी। ये हिंदी, अंग्रेजी दोनों भाषाओं में काम करता है। एक विशेषता लाइव मैप की सहायता से क्षेत्रफल और लोकेशन प्राप्त कर सकता है। जमीन से जुड़ी जानकारी तत्काल आसानी से प्राप्त की जा सकती है। सब्सिडी तय कर लेते हैं शिवराज ने कहा कि सब्सिडी को लेकर एक काम करते हैं, मेरे मंत्री भी बैठें हैं। किसान फसल बीमा से लेकर खाद, नलकूप, पॉली हाउस, वेयर हाउस और पशु समेत किसानों के लिए अन्य तरह की योजनाएं हैं। यह कंपनी के माध्यम से किसानों तक पहुंचाई जाती हैं। इन सबकी सब्सिडी तय कर लेते हैं और उसे बांटकर किसानों के खातों में सीधे डाल देते हैं। अब किसान खुद ही तय कर ले, उसे क्या करना है। ऐसे में कोई खेल नहीं हो पाएगा। खाद में भी खेल होता है। कंपनी छोड़ो और किसान के खाते में अब पैसा डाल दो। किसान खुद बाजार में जाकर खरीदकर लें। सब मिलकर तय करेंगे। सीएम ने कहा कि इस संबंध में प्रधानमंत्री से बात करूंगा। अगर तय हो गया तो कहीं कोई आवेदन करने की जरूरत नहीं है। कंपनी का खेल खत्म हो जाएगा। किसान और सरकार सीधे जुड़ जाएंगे। सिर्फ विरोध की राजनीति नहीं होना चाहिए शिवराज ने कहा कि मेहनत करके हम (किसान) अनाज मंडी तक ले जाएं। वहां अधिकारी दाने उछालकर देखते हैं और कहते हैं- ठीक नहीं है। यहां तक की भटा पर भी 8% कमीशन काट रहे है। नए बिल में यह है कि अगर मंडी में बेचना है तो मंडी में बेचो। मंडी बंद नहीं होंगी। प्रधानमंत्री और मध्य प्रदेश का मुख्यमंत्री कह रहा है। कोई चिंता की बात नहीं है। मंडी बंद नहीं होंगी और मंडियां बनाएंगे। लेकिन अगर कोई मेरी फसल खेत से ही खरीद ले जाए। अच्छे दाम भी दे तो बुराई क्या है। इसमें आप मुझे दादागिरी कैसे कर सकते हो कि इसी मंडी में जाकर फसल बेचो। सिर्फ विरोध की राजनीति नहीं होना चाहिए

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering:
How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative
team go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a
$70 million debut, which would still have been down a
fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.
A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away
from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a
musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise
Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.
But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile
foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at
Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews:
Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a
meager half star out of five possible.
‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce,
though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was
to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the
reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to
$121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s
The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its
second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five,
Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s
start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office
deficit.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some
who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first
movie
Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make
something as ‘audacious’ as the first film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold ,
as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck,
imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the
first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined
song and dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many
think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first
movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of
critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book
characters on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of
much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss
was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including
best picture and best director, and three wins. It also made
over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film
of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the
crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

club in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a
year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the
stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular
gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
croque monsieur that tastes far better than it
ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady
of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have
barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment,
insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day
if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing
the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely
trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,
‘ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making
both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how
US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while another
disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform
but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was
poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed
Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner
of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president
Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William
Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor
and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12
senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister
Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms
but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’
views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal
Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success
when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal
seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16,
with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and
Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has
recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded
Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals,
however.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late
2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house –
the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker: Folie à Deux, the New
York City native, 38, is releasing a single titled Disease, set
to be released Friday.
Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh
album, was teased Tuesday on the Grammy-winning artist’s Instagram account, as she
captioned the image: ‘DISEASE 10.25.’
In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle,
the actress-singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, sported a black mane as she ran from
it.
Gaga’s label Universal Music on Monday put out pre-saves for the forthcoming single,

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were
done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite
in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO
of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of
the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading
up to an election in next year, the prospects back
in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard
lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s
privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed
a politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat
was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the
policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese
about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt,
and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since
2002 during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the VIP club
The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve
Price had to explain what the private enclave actually
was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a
separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret
Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard
Wilkins was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his
only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60
Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among
the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private
place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio
show.

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its
Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders
some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded
Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,
‘ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the
sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be personally invited by
the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that
the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class
in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

The report noted that politicians declaring membership
of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got
too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the
day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson,
and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a
gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson
told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by
invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership
of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very
high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist
Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives
and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s
leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of
his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and
all 12 assistant ministers.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member and so is Teal MP,
Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime
Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing,
Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business
class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points,
and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership
to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious,
with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent
selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the ‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies
star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from
Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a director
of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’
he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent
the public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released

– had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences –
and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker
(Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a
sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the
sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her.

claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia

words to say – I have been so excited to release my new music and
to see all the monsters come alive and dance and perform and smile and cry

Massive floods have forced more than 122,000 people out of their homes in Malaysia
More than 122,000 people have been forced out of their
homes as massive floods caused by relentless rains swept through Malaysia’s northern states, disaster management
officials said Saturday.
The number surpassed the 118,000 evacuated during one of the country’s
worst floodings in 2014, and disaster officials feared it could rise further
as there was no let-up in torrential downpours.
The death toll remained at four recorded across Kelantan, Terengganu and Sarawak.
Kelantan state bore the brunt of the flooding, accounting for 63 percent of the 122,631 people evacuated, according to data from the National Disaster Management Agency.
Nearly 35,000 people were evacuated in Terengganu, with the rest
of the displacements reported from seven other states.
Heavy rains, which began early this week, continued to hammer Pasir Puteh town in Kelantan, where people
could be seen walking through streets inundated with hip-deep waters.
“My area has been flooded since Wednesday. The water has already reached my house corridor and is just two inches away from coming inside,” Pasir Puteh resident and school
janitor Zamrah Majid, 59, told AFP.
“Luckily, I moved my two cars to a higher ground before the water level rose.”
She said she allowed her grandchildren to play in the water in front of her house because it was still shallow.
“But if the water gets higher, it would be dangerous, I’m afraid they might get swept away,” she added.
“I haven’t received any assistance yet, whether it’s welfare or other kinds of help.”
Muhammad Zulkarnain, 27, who is living with his parents
in Pasir Puteh, said they were isolated.
“There’s no way in or out of for any vehicles to enter my neighbourhood,” he told AFP by
phone.

“Of course I’m scared… Luckily we have received some assistance from NGOs, they gave us food supplies like biscuits, instant noodles, and eggs.”
The Malaysian Meteorological Department warned that heavy

Floods are an annual phenomenon in the Southeast Asian nation of
34 million people due to the northeast monsoon that brings heavy
rain from November to March.
Thousands of emergency services personnel have been deployed in flood-prone states along with rescue boats, four-wheel-drive vehicles and helicopters, said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who chairs the National Disaster Management Committee.

March 6 (Reuters) – Altria Group Inc said on Monday it would
buy startup NJOY Holdings Inc for about $2.75 billion in cash, in a fresh bet by the Marlboro
maker on the e-cigarette market after losing billions through its investment in Juul.
Big tobacco firms are investing heavily in traditional cigarette alternatives as smoking rates decline globally, but the e-cigarette category has faced tough regulatory scrutiny over under-age usage and health concerns.
Altria is betting that NJOY will prove to be an easier way to
tap the market since six of the company’s products have received full approval
from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
In comparison, Juul is still seeking approval of its products and is
under the threat that the health regulator could pull its
products off shelves nationwide as it briefly did last year.
“(NJOY) is an authorized product versus a pending product (from Juul). There are no litigation challenges. The youth usage is at minimum and so that brings a level of certainty,” said Altria Chief Executive Officer Billy Gifford.
Still, NJOY’s U.S. market share lags well behind that of Juul.
“If Altria wants to make NJOY successful enough so that its e-cig market share becomes somewhat respectable… we believe it will have to spend very aggressively,” Barclays analysts said.
Altria on Friday exchanged its investment in Juul, last
valued at $250 million, for some of the vaping company’s
heated tobacco intellectual property.
“We are no longer limited by the terms of those agreements to pursue other strategic opportunities and partnerships,” Juul said.
Altria’s stake in Juul, valued at $12.8 billion in 2018, had raised antitrust concerns and the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint in April 2020.
But an administrative law judge dismissed the complaint in February 2022.
To help fund the deal, Altria said it would use cash from a $2.7 billion agreement it entered with
Philip Morris International last year for its IQOS heated tobacco products.
The NJOY deal will include an additional $500 million in cash payments based on regulatory approvals of the company’s other products.

in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20
per cent less.
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had
earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for
a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score
of 31% and a critic score of 32%.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic
box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first
released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over
$1 billion in the global box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However,
the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200
million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice
International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of
the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best
Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film
Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive
and original films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but
credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings
up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’
