Stop using social media to troll the government and stop sending inappropriate emails to elected representatives or be ready to face the music – this is the new diktat of Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) and Institute of Company Secretaries (ICSI) to members.
The development comes after several chartered accountants and company secretaries trolled the online handles of various government departments including the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and the Finance Ministry all January. Their primary demand was extension of timeline for various regulatory filings pertaining to Goods and Services Tax(GST), statutory audits etc.
Also, the government came out with some one-time amnesty schemes like the Companies Fresh Start Scheme (CFSS) where companies could settle their old regulatory lapses between April 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020. A similar scheme was even announced for Limited Liability Partnerships(LLPs) with the same deadlines. Due to covid-19 and prevailing lockdowns, some of the companies could not avail these schemes and professionals wanted the timeline to be extended.
In an advisory dated February 11, ICAI said the institute can act against any of the chartered accountants if they bring ‘disrepute’ to the organisation-even if such actions were related to their personal lives.
“Some of them have written to Ministry of Corporate Affairs and higher forums…some of the posts are highly objectionable which have potential to create social and communal disharmony, threatening peace, tranquillity and may disrupt the security of the nation,” the advisory said.
