Joker: Folie à Deux was quickly booted from its top spot at
the box office after only one week and replaced by a spooky new champ.

With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed its
way to the top of the box office over the weekend. The plot about
a deadly clown named Art, determined to literally
kill the Christmas holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3 million at
the box office according to The Numbers.

The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and
written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated
blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.

Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a robot named Roz who is stranded on a small island after being
shipwrecked. There, she bonds with the animals, who are her new neighbors,
and begins taking care of an orphaned goose.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first
time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book,
The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to
him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told
Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr
Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights
Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London,
Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and
said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see
declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is
a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney
seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page
of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s
response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’
at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who
struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,
‘ he said.

after two days of denials

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack,
Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the
Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also
taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays
when you were the Transport Minister? The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying
to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer
himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the
latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this
part to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the
book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.

This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians
on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.
They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here
trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations
being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the
freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite
normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the
front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the
only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of
the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who
I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And
I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight
can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes,
you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the
ticket is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re
not going to the airport crossing your fingers
going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas
who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his
time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars
and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

One of the hardest duties for any doctor is having to break the
news to a patient that their illness is terminal.
Few people are ready to hear it. And their first question is always the same: ‘How long
have I got?’

The truthful answer is usually: ‘I don’t know.’ I’m a GP, not a fortune
teller.

And that’s the single most pressing reason the assisted dying
Bill should have been voted down. To implement it would be recklessly dishonest – because doctors can never see into the future, certainly not precisely enough to pinpoint a date of death within six
months.

A wise palliative care consultant once gave me a rule of thumb:
if a patient has been declining over years, they could live for
years more – but if the progression is much quicker, over weeks, then they might have just weeks left.

But every rule of thumb comes with exceptions. The prognosis for pancreatic cancer,
for example, is often grim. Its onset is quick, and death frequently follows diagnosis within three months.

That’s not always the case. One man whose family I knew well refused
to talk to his family about his pancreatic cancer, or his approaching death.
In desperation, his daughter asked me to talk to him about it.

I approached the subject as delicately as I could.
Had he thought about what sort of end he wanted – would he
prefer to be at home or in a hospital? And had he made
plans for his funeral?

He was furious with me, and absolutely outraged that
I should try to discuss it. He had no intention of dying, and certainly not within three months.

Labour’s Kim Leadbeater, who tabled the Bill, argues: ‘We should all have the right to a good life and, where possible, a good
death.’ 

And, as it happened, he was right. He responded well to chemotherapy, and hung on for three more
years, fighting to the end.

The intolerable pressure that would have been placed on that man and his
family, if assisted dying had been an option, doesn’t bear thinking about.
He was determined to live – most patients are, in my
experience. To offer him the choice of dying would be to risk robbing him of the last
three years of his life – years that frankly I didn’t expect he would have.

Anyone in great pain, facing the shock of a terminal diagnosis,
is not in a safe position to make an irreversible decision. I’ve known patients who ignored their symptoms until they ended up in A&E, perhaps on a trolley in the corridor or huddled all
night in a waiting room.

At that point, they might be desperate to die. But 48
hours later, once they are on an elderly care ward and finally receiving the right palliative
care, it’s a different story. Perhaps a nurse is able to take them into the hospital garden in a wheelchair, and
they can breathe fresh air without pain – and they’re glad to be alive.

That’s what we should be aiming for: good pain management.
With proper funding and investment in palliative care, this should
be possible for most people. Sadly, it’s not the case right now, and too many people die drawn-out, painful deaths, with unnecessary suffering.

The data shows that people who have seen relatives die that way are most likely to want the
option of assisted dying for themselves. I understand that.
They are terrified of having to endure what they’ve
just seen a spouse, sibling or parent go through.

But we shouldn’t be telling people they have to choose between a bad death or an early one.
There is another way: a good death.

When I say this, people shout at me online, telling me I’m denying them their right
to choose. But their right to die doesn’t outweigh the right other people have to
live. These two rights are simply incompatible.

If assisted dying becomes an option – and, despite
today’s successful vote in the Commons, there are plenty of hurdles ahead before it becomes law – many patients with terminal illnesses will feel
pressure from many quarters, especially family members, to request it.
The choice comes with an unspoken threat: ‘Death will be awful.

Get it over with and save everyone some misery.’

Some adult children will be eager to discuss it with their ailing parents,
when instead they ought to be talking about how to ensure the best medical care and pain relief.

Many older people dread the thought of being a burden to their children. They are horrified,
too, at the thought of spending their savings, and often having
to sell their homes to pay for care.

They might well feel that dying sooner would
allow them to leave their loved ones a bigger nest egg, and that they
have a duty to do so. The fact is that, for a lot of terminally ill patients, money will
immediately become a consideration when they talk about assisted dying.

I’ve heard people argue that we’re not a nation of murderers,
and no one would actually coerce a relative to die just to keep an inheritance intact.

Their faith in human nature is admirable, but all doctors will be able to cite anecdotal evidence against it in certain families.
One man I knew moved, with his partner, into his aunt’s
house while she was in hospital recovering from a stroke – and he made it very
clear he didn’t want her to come home again. He’d
claimed his inheritance before she was even dead.

Advocates for the Bill point out that there will be solid safeguards against coercion by unscrupulous relatives.
But how safe are the safeguards?

The expert opinion of two doctors will be required before a High
Court judge makes a decision. But I believe that decision will be a mere rubber stamp:
judges don’t have the time or the medical expertise to contest a doctor’s opinion.

GP Renée Hoenderkamp says that the assisted dying Bill is an insult to the Hippocratic
oath

There will always be crusading doctors who believe some illnesses should never be borne, whether that’s
motor neurone disease or, as we’ve seen in other countries
with assisted dying, mental illnesses. In the Netherlands, the right
to die has been offered to people with depression and autism, which should certainly not be regarded as terminal conditions.
Once we have assisted suicide on the statute books, the danger is that we,
too, will start to slip down this route and begin to argue that it should be applied
to the disabled and the mentally ill or impaired.

Other doctors will feel they are being placed in an invidious position, subject to emotional blackmail by patients who have decided
they want to be assisted to die. How do I say no to a patient and then maintain our
doctor-patient relationship?

And though it appals me to say so, there will also be corrupt doctors who will make it their business to recommend assisted dying in return for
a fee.

If this Bill becomes law, I will recuse myself.
I did not train in medicine to kill people.

The fact is that good palliative care, where available, already gives
doctors the ability to ease a death. When someone is beyond the
aid of ordinary pain relief, we have the option to
give deep sleep sedation. The patient is placed in an unconscious state, no longer alert and feeling pain, and over the next few hours
or days they will slip away.

That has long been the case, and it is the only way assisted dying should be implemented in Britain. Anything
else is assisted suicide – and an insult to the Hippocratic oath by which every doctor must abide.

The Australian government has issued a stern warning to horror fans flocking to cinemas to see the ultra-violent
slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about its extreme content and
disturbing themes.

more gruesome, stomach-churning scenes.

The movie has broken box office records as horror enthusiasts are
lured in by the film’s reputation for intense violence
and shock value.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts has warned Australian audiences to prepare for scenes
of graphic violence, dismemberment and disturbing
themes that go well beyond typical horror fare.

The film includes brutal depictions of murder using a variety of weapons, from chainsaws to axes and
guns, resulting in explicit injury detail and copious amounts of blood.

The warning also highlights that the movie portrays self-harm, cannibalism, animal cruelty and violence involving children, pushing

The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two people
fainted right in front of her during the screening she
attended at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over the weekend.

The first fainted during the opening scene, she said in her film review shared to YouTube, and the second nearer
to the end of the two-house spectacle.

‘Can you tell me… why did two people feint right in front of me
during that film?’ she said.

‘Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because they felt so queasy.’

The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both people and tried to assist
them because she was seated directly behind them.

The first was a man, who left with a friend who came to check on him, and second Australian victim was a
young woman.

‘This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the stairs, I felt so bad for her.
I went and checked on her afterwards,’ Clarke claimed.

‘She did get help. She was with her friend. It really shook me up too.
It actually took me out of the film for the moment.’

The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies for the past four years, said
she has never seen audience members have such a visceral reaction to a film.

Australian politicians are almost always opting
to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips,
despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being the cheapest route,
according to travel data provided to the government.

While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the
most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points
on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can,
but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport
lounges and flight upgrades.

‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings
by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for
the Australian Financial Review.

‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight
bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance
this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.

Joker: Folie À Deux is heading to streaming, just
weeks after its theatrical release. 

The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be available to rent
from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner
Bros. investment into the film, as per Variety.

The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose
at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical
run’ according to the publication.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing
and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box
office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for
a comic book movie.

The movie will be available to rent from home starting October 29,
in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros. investment into the film, according to Variety 

The film is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to the
publication

The sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for Warner
Bros, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to
ignite at the box office

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn)

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score
of 31% and a critic score of 32%.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a
musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar
with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’
during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and
Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some
down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it
makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People
showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the
film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while
Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca,
Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two
months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the
studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a
reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.

movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022
and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at
a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the
fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips
seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the
decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations
are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice
Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with
a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve
Coogan.

Both were featured in a list of Golden Globe
nomination predictions recently compiled by Variety.

Saoirse Ronan was another notable snub, failing to receive Golden Globe recognition for

Elsewhere Demi Moore has been acknowledged for her starring role alongside

Landman.

British Netflix drama Baby Reindeer has also been acknowledged,
with the Richard Gadd written show featuring in the category for Best Limited
Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture and its
lead actress Jessica Gunning named as Best Supporting Female Actor – Television.

The show will compete alongside the hugely popular Ripley, controversial
biopic Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, True Detective:
Night Country, Ripley and The Penguin.

During the upcoming awards ceremony, Cheers legend Ted Danson will receive the Carol Burnett
Award for those who have “made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen” and Viola Davis will be handed
the Cecil B. DeMille Award for achievement in film.
