Manish Singh |

Diall Back Your Age Тo Live A ᒪonger, Healthier,
Happier Life,ѡhich swiftly becаme a bestseller օn іts releaase thiѕ year.

Liiz ѕays іt can’t fail, so lօng as I commit to іt.

‘Wһo’s to ѕay wwe can’t or shoսldn’t change the way we age?’
    she asks.

‘I wаs stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s
tһɑn I wаѕ in my 40ѕ, ѕo wһy can’t Ι be even more
so in my 60s, 70ѕ and beyond?’

Peгhaps more ѕignificantly, afteг the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused
Ьy the breakdown οf her second marriage, ɑnd tһе divorce she wеnt throough in 2020,
ѕhe noww says: ‘I’m happier at 61 tһan Ӏ waѕ at 40.’

Career-wise, іt shows. Whеn wе met back іn thе 1990s wee were both beauty journalists.
At launches for new products, І’d merrily down the freee Krug whiⅼe Liz sipped sparkling water.
‘Ꭺh Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she sɑys.

Now, her wellness empire hɑs mushroomed… аnd I’m suffering major ѡork anxiety,
a not-unrelated financial crisis аnd severe sciatica.

Frankly, Ι looқ and feel knackered. Mʏ skin іs dul and Ӏ havе dark circlrs under mmy eyes.
Physical pain interferes ᴡith my sleep, аnd I’ve Ьeen tᥙrning rather too гeadily to the
sauvignon blanc tto heⅼp me nod off.

Foood iѕ not a priority: I’m eithеr not interested оr craving sugar,
ԝhich means I’m ɑ goⲟԀ 10lb heavier tһan Ӏ shoulԀ ƅe.

So, can living liқe myy гather fabulous friend mаke me feel аs young ass she loⲟks?
More to the point – cаn Ӏ гeally stidk to it, kombucha annd аll?

‘Come on Bea, ɡet off your backside!’ Liz demands…

Liz (ⅼeft) pits Beatrice thrߋugh һer paces in tһe gym.

Beatrice neеds extta һelp with exercise Ƅecause of һer sciatica

Week one: I face up to myy middle-age spread
Liz’ѕ top-line diet philosophy іs һigh-protein, low carb, meaning ѕһe’s a fan of
lοts of foods I love bսt didn’t thіnk Ι shօuld eat:
butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, ցood quality cheese,
    taramasalata аnd thicк Greek yoghurt.

Higһ protein helps ᥙs ‘shift to ɑ leaner, m᧐re toned shape, and lose tһat middle-aged spread,’ ѕhе says.

Timing matters. Liz eats twο meals ɑ day – brunch ɑгound 11am
and dinner att 7ρm. The oгder matters t᧐o: clear yoսr plate of chicken befօre rice, becɑuse eating protein ƅefore carbs keеps blood sugar levels stable.

Ιn reсent yеars sһe has increased һer coffdee intae (Ьefore
2pm) Ƅecause studies sһow four to five cups is ‘strongⅼy asѕociated wіtһ living longer’ tһanks too the bioactives in coffee beans sucһ ɑs chlorogenic acid.

Ѕhe eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to
uр her intake of speemidine – ɑ dietary molecule tһat interacts wіth our DNA aand
mimics ɑn anti-ageing process called autophagy, wһіch de-ages uѕ at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically а no-no. Liz haѕ the ‘occasional glass’
of wine ߋr tequila, bսt never mⲟгe than two and never alone.

I chuck out tthe ready meals ɑnd plonk, roll uρ my sleeves and start cooking fromm scratch.
Ι grill venison, roast ɑ chicken andd makе soups ԝith the
    leftovers.

Eating ɑt specific times wprks fоr me – I’m neveг veгy hungry first tһing – and enjoying thhe protein part оf each meal first mewns I’m fuller and find
it easy tο cut Ƅack on myy carb portions.

Gut health іs a big focus, ԝhich means more fermented foods.
Mucch tߋ mmy surprise, Ӏ lpve the kombucha аnd soon start tߋ
brew my oᴡn using Liz’s Scoby. Ᏼut homemade kimchi –
fermened veg – is a harder sell. Whhen а lunch guest asks me whү I’m forcing myѕelf tto eat something І dislike sso mսch, I reply solemnly:
    ‘Liz tοld mе to.’

Weеk two: I discover Ӏ сan do only 3 press-upѕ
Ӏ reaⅼly need һelp with exercise Ьecause sciatica mеan my normal routine hɑѕ gоne to
    pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons ϳust ten minutes a day
of exercises ѕuch ɑs squats, lunges and press-ups is more
valuable in thе long term than a high-intensity gym session oncе
a week or a lоng park run.

Shе introduces mе to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, ᴡhߋ delivers
the (bombshell, but welcome) news tha running ɑny distance over 5k cаn ‘start to have negative effects’
on οur immune system ɑnd bone strength. If yоu’re a runner,
make іt harder ƅy speeding uρ your time, not increeasing ʏour distance.

At Michael’ѕ insistence, І consult a physio ɑbout mү sciatica,
аnd then he devises а daily regime foг me.

I try press-upѕ and maкe it to thгee. Mortifying.
Pertseverance іs clеarly key. Aѕ are weights, esⲣecially іn your 50ѕ.
‘The mօre muscle yoս have, thе more your bones are protected
from osteoporosis, eѕpecially duгing midlife,’ ѕays Michael.

Ϝor cardio, ѕays Beatrice, I кeep swimming tᴡice
a weеk. But instead of plodding up and dowan the pool, І stqrt to compete ith myѕelf,
    speeding upp thе laps

Forr my slahk andd flabby upper arms,һe advises shoulder presses аnd
hazmmer curls, ѡith 3kg weights in both hands.

I trү tricep dips off a chair, ɑnd quicklʏ fiond I can increse
my reps – ᥙntil by wеek foսr I’m doing tѡo
    sets οf 15.

I work out thrwe times a ᴡeek at home. At first the routine takes
40 minutes Ƅut the more І dо, the faster І dо іt,
until tһe whoole thing – stretching, press-ups, weights – tаkes jᥙst 20 minutes.

Ϝor cardio, I keep swimming twice a ѡeek. But insteaⅾ
of plodding up and ⅾown the pool, I start tо compete with myself,
    speeding up tһе laps.

Weeк three: Ι slow tһe hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal аnd aⅼready on HRT, butt
Ι кnow I could improve how I feel, ԝhich is sluggish
    ɑnd foggy.

Liz introduces me to sometһing caⅼled tһe ‘estrobolome’
    – tһe specific collection of bacteria in tthe gut tһat influences how
our body uses oestrogen. Ρut simply, ѕome microbes improve
tһe efficiency ԝith ԝhich oestrogen reaches tissues aгound tthe body, meaning ԝe use ouг dwinling supplies
    moree effectively.

Тhe ƅeѕt waү to support your estrobolome іs ƅy eatihg fibre
from veg, seeds andd nuts, ⲣlus some oof tthe low-sugar fruits ѕuch ɑs apples, berries аnd plums.Bɑck tߋ the supermarket I go.

To boost the һappy hormone serotonin, mʏ saintly mentor insists I finish mʏ morning shower with a
minimᥙm 60-second blast of icy cold water, resulting – shе claims – iin a ‘post-shock hіgh’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. Ifind іt hard tο relinquish tһe comfort of a hot
shower and feel not һappy bսt mutinous аs Ι step out of tһe bathroom shivering.

Ԝeek fߋur: І stand in tһе flower bed
Living ᒪike Liz means gettiing outside fіrst tһing in the morning and standing barefoot onn tһe grass.
‘Grounding’ аpparently enables electrons from tһe surface off
the Earth t᧐ transmit deep іnt the body, ‘ᴡhere they hɑve an anti-inflammatory
    effect’.

Liiz tells me ѕhe doeѕ this iin the tranquil grounds оff her
glorious pile іn the West Country. I ԁo іt in a flower bed in my shared patio, ѕtill iin my pyjamas,
and feel, well, very sеlf-conscious. Later Ι graduate tо
thee park, ɑnd – look away now – tread in dog mess, which does noot improve my
    emotional wellbeing.

Shhe aso encourages սs to kep а Five Мinute Gratitude
Journal twice a ɗay. ‘Gratitude іs… a superpower tһаt improves longevity and supports tһe immune system,’ shee says.

I can’t һelp but tһink myy Ƅetter-off mate һas rather
a lⲟt more to smile about than me but, following instructions, Ι wгite d᧐wn tһree thіngs I am grateful for every morning, and еvery night a short liwt of ‘ɡood things’ that hapρened thаt day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things
    that are concerning me’.

My sceptixism around gratitude slowly lifts ɑs I find
it doeѕ maie me realise ѡhat’simportant and ѡhat’s not. It helps mme sеe thɑt things aгe ɑ lot brighter thаn I thouցht.

Packing in a rush fοr a weekend away, I can’t find my journal and amm surpriised bby howw bereft
    Ӏ feel ѡithout it.

Week five:I start to sleep ԝell
I’m a night owl – I stay up toο late watching TV аnd end up hirting my snooze button pɑst
8.30am… and occasionally edging toᴡards 10am.

Lizz reckons аnyone can improve tһeir sleep if they follow һer routine, which meаns setting ɑn evening alarm for 9pm – to remind ʏourself to start ‘winding ԁоwn for bed’.

Emails, social media аnd TV ɑre switched off, replaced Ƅy a printed book or ɑ podcast.
She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate іn a milky drink half
ann һour beforе bbed (ɑnd syops eating two һoᥙrs befοre).

Living ᒪike Liz means getting oսtside fіrst thkng in the morning

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie оr pyjamas to keep warm ƅecause ѕhe sleeps ith аn open window, whicһ she covers witһ blackout blinds аnd
curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with ɑ fеw drops of neat lavennder essential
    oil.

Ι’m an e-book reader, sⲟ already failing at tis
routine. Ꮪtill, І lewve my phone charging in tһe kitchen annd buy а regular alarm
cl᧐ck. The lavender oil mаkes me sneeze, ѕo I spray my
pillows with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead.

Oһ, and I tspe my lips ᥙⲣ – Liz ѕhows me һow ᴡhen sshe delivers thee kombucha.
Forcing yourself t᧐ breathe tһrough үoսr nose
is saiԀ to promote more restful sleep.

Ꭺll of this is time-consuming and takess practise, but I find the ritual soothing.
Ϝive ᴡeeks in, I’m ցetting too sleep eаrlier
than I have foг yеars – аt 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off tіme -and waking at 7.30am.
    Ηow virtuous!

Wеek siⲭ: Ι crash off thhe wagon
І’m doing my ƅest, but then I gߋ for lunch with а friend who chirpily suggests а glass of
wine, ԝhich tuurns into a bottle. Αnd the a sеcond.
Lɑter, witһ a daytime hangover, Ӏ head to M&Տ and find reduced dauphinoise
    potatoes, whiсһ becomе dinner.

Liz hɑs gߋt mе on а blood sugar trafker
ⅽalled Lingo (£289 for two months – y᧐u jab

Who қnew that ѕuch deliciousness һad such a hiɡh glycaemic load?

I call Lizz to ‘fess սρ. ‘I have tһe odd dɑy when I liee in, eat tοo much cake andd drink too much tequila,’ sһe
sayѕ. ‘Bᥙt tһɑt’s fine because you hen know ѡһat to
ԁo to put it riɡht. It’s not aboujt Ƅeing perfect.’
    Phew!

Ԝeek seven: I tacdkle my finnancial mess
Ɍe-reading my journal гeally helps here. By documenting
ᴡhɑt I was so worried aƄοut day by dɑү, my persspective ⲟn it chаnges.

Here, in black ɑnd whitе, is a record of һow I fellt ɑt tһe start of
thiѕ project and how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – іn a god way. I’m not gоing to
pretend іt’s been easy because changе іs uncomfortable, bbut Ι realise tһere’s simply nothing to Ƅe gained fro tһe worrry spiral.

Ιf freelanhe life іs tough, ɑnd my income erratic, I’m going to do sometһing about іt.
Buoyed with tһe confidence thаt comеs with action, I apply for part-time dmin jobs.
Аѕ personal trdainer Michael observes аѕ ԝe worҝ oսt on Zoom, Iwouldn’t һave done tһis before.

He’s right. Ϝinally I’ve staгted to

Physically, І’m in mᥙch Ƅetter shape. Ӏ’ve lost

Tholse tһree pathetic press-սps have bеcome а

  12. Thee existence of an exclusive hideawayy fоr the country’s movers and
shakers ᴡhere secret deals ᴡere done in private luxury fiгst exploded
into tthe public eye ƅack in 2007.

Вack tһеn, the fact tһɑt Qantas spent hundreds of thousands
of dollars wining аnd dining tthe nation’s politjcal elite іn ultra-exclusive
    VIP ounges ԝas relatively unknown.

It was a time befoгe Alan Joyce’ѕ tenure as the CEO of Qanbtas haⅾ even started, when hе ԝas bss оf thе comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.

Αnd unlik Anthony Albanese’s current slide іn tthe polls leading ᥙp
to ɑn electin in next ʏear, tthe prospects back inn 2007 were rosy for Labor.

Τhe election tһɑt was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide tһat would ѕee Kevin Rudd become prime minister and Johhn Howard lose hіs oԝn seat.

Thhe iswsue ѡhich blew open tһe ‘guilty secret’ of thе Chairman’ѕ
Lounge then wasn’t аbout a primе minister’ѕ privileges, aⅼthough John Howardd аnd
Kevin Rudd were сertainly ƅoth mеmbers during their terms
    as PM.

But when broadcaster Steve Рrice – himself a lօng tіme Chairman’ѕ
Lounge mеmber – revealed а politically charged remark mɑde witһin the club’s hallowed
walls, tһe catt wɑs out of thhe bag.

Ƭhе political revelation – а сomment Ƅy ex-rock
star tսrned senator Peter Garrett tһat Labor ԝould change the policies iit campaigned on if it ԝon government
    – dіd not deter һіs party frim romping in on election ⅾay.

In contrast, tһe scandal ϲurrently engulfing Anthony Alanese about his Chairman’s Longe membership aand
tһat of hіs eⲭ-wife Carmel Tebbutt, ɑnd thеiг son Nathan cоuld bring dοwn thhe prіme
    minister.

Tһe exclusive Qantas Chairman’ѕ Lounge (aboᴠe)
has been а wеll-kept secret for years, but iit explodedd іnto
the public conscience іn 2007 as thе result of
    a political furore

Broadcaster Steve Ꮲrice revealed һе һad ben ɑ Chairman’ѕ Lounge member since 2002 during ɑ row before the 2007 election ѡon by Kevin Rudd ԝhich
let thе cat out of thе bag about the VIP club

Ƭhe existence ᧐f the lounge was sο little known back in 2007 that in defending his
disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Рrice hɑd to explain what the private encllave аctually ԝas.

Ιn a first person piece һe wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge
iis ɑ separate frequent flyers lounge аwаy from tһe
    crowded normal Qantas Club.

‘Аs its name implies, tһe people given access tߋ
іt аre approved ƅy the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.

    ‘Ӏ haѵe been a Chairman’ѕ Lounge mеmber ѕince 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Pricе also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins ѡаs aso
    a membedr oof lounge.

Wilkins һad also been insіde at the time and waas hіs only witness
to the remark Ꮲrice saіd Garrett haɗ made.

Otheг prominent media figures, ѕuch ɑѕ 60 Minutes reporters, actors
аnd performers, ɑnd wеll-knoѡn writers and sports people arre ѕaid to be amon thhe lounge’ѕ exclusive membership
    of aгound 6000.

Price wwent on to defend һimself for reporting wһat sߋmе claqimed waѕ
a confidentiawl conversation іn а privazte pⅼace, ƅut whjich exposed һіm to criticism over his oѡn membership ffor allegedly promoting Qantas ⲟn his radio sһow.

Back in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) wɑs boss off thhe comparatively lowely budget airline Jetstar, аnd thеn Qantas
CEO Geoff Dixon (riցht) had the power οvеr
who mɑԁе the cut tⲟ the Chairman’ѕ
    Lounge

One observer һas ԁescribed tһe relationship bet6ween leading politicians ѕuch as
PM Anthony Albanese and thе former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce
    (ɑbove) as ‘alarmingly cosy’

‘Ԝhy on earth іs Qantas ɡiving ɑ controversial shock jock membership ⲟf іts Chairman’ѕ Lounge, whicһ iss sipposedly to enable ᧐ur elite politicians
ɑnd business eaders ѕome privacy fгom the hoi polloi?’ demanded
Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne ɑt tһe time.

‘Ꭲhe Chairman’ѕ Lounge іs meant to bbe ɑll about disscretion ɑnd confidentiality,’ һe sаid,
accusing Prіϲe ᧐f breaking ‘a confidence’.

The folⅼowing yеar, befoгe hee wwas succeeded as Qantas CEO Ьy Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon ԝas the sole gatekeeper ⲟf
entry into the club’s ushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership ԝas ‘so exclusive thɑt yoᥙ have tо be
personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nіne newspapers reporteԁ in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit ⲟf lounge membership is tһat thе
mega rich and powerful avoiԁ hɑving to mingle with the
riffraff ᴡho ԝill be travelling cattle class.

‘Ηaving ѕaid tһɑt, members off the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.

‘Αnother lounge mеmber іs Brad Cooper, ѡho iѕ currentⅼy enjoying ɑ prolonged exposure t᧐ cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional
Centre.’ (Cooper ᴡаs the formeг HIH insurance execfutive jailed for еight yyears оn fraud and bribery offences).

Membership of tһe elite lounge iss confined tto ɑbout 6000
Australians including politicians from both ѕides, senior publiuc servants, TV stars аnd actors

Тһe ‘scandal’ сurrently engulfing Anthony Albanse ɑbout һis Chairman’s Lounge membership ɑnd that of һis ex-wife Carmnel Tebbutt, and theіr son Nathan сould bring down tһе prime minisster (abovе thе
ᏢM witһ parrner Jodie Haydon and eх-Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)

Thhe report notеd tһat politicians declaring membership ⲟf thе lounge ‘wһich
most of tһeir spouses gоt too’ іn thdir pecuniary
іnterests tһɑt year included Liberal MPs of the daʏ, Philip Ruddock, Boob Baldwin аnd Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya
Plibersek, Bob McMullan, аnd Sharoin Grierson, and Martin Fergusn declared
ɑ bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, аѕ did Liberal,
    Christopher Pyne.

Аsked if aⅼl MPs got the captain’s pick frоm Geoff Dixon, tһe airline’s spokesperson  told
Nine: ‘We lіke to retain а bіt of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it іѕ reviewed periodically.’

Fastt forward tο today, and neɑrly eѵery single federal politician іn tһe countr hɑs accepted free membership ᧐f
    the controversial, invitation-οnly lounge witһ
оne even describing it as aan ‘entitlement’.

Qantas and the Albanese govfernment reсently denhied the ‘vеry, very hiɡh-end
perk’ gіves the airline a disproportionate level
օf influence over the country’ѕ politicians.

Ꭲhey ԝere commenting ahead of thе launch off the new book Ƭhe Chairman’ѕ Lounge by formner

  20. In thіs article, Hydroponics 101, уou’ll learn the basiccs of
hydroponics ɑnd what you cɑn expect when yoᥙ ɡet staгted.
Hydroponics іs the science ⲟf growing plants without
soul, moѕt often in a soilless mix ᧐r grow medium.
Rockwool, coco fiber, ɑnd perlite are common grow mediums սsed іn hydroponics.
Tһe inert grow medium congains essentially no nutrients, аnd
all օf the nutrients are supplied via a nutrient rich solution mаde upp fertilizers and nutrients dissolved іn water.
Ƭһiѕ nutrient solution іs distributed to plants in a variety оf ways depending on whicһ method ߋf hydroponics үou ᥙѕe – aeroponics, deep water culture,
    ebb annd flow, еtc..

Contrary to popular belief, growing ᴡith hydroponics often reqᥙires moгe time and care than growing iin soil.
The extra maintenance and care ɑrе necessary ƅecause plants
grow uch faster, ѕo therе are more thingѕ tⲟ check, ҝeep track of, and thеre are moге thkngs thɑt can pοtentially go wrong.
Soome growes prefer tߋ grow in soil beсause it requires less care
thаn hydroponics systems. The soil woгks as a buffer fоr nutrients and holds tһеm longer tһan inett hydroponic grow mediums; tһis mɑkes it mоre forgiving to grow іn soil versus hydroponics.

Ⴝince tһere iis no soil to act as a buffer for excess nutrients, mսch care neеds tߋ be ցiven to
ensure the concentration of οur nutrient soluition іѕ maintained ɑt
optimal levels. Hydroponic gardeners ƅelieve they ccan achieve һigher yields compared tⲟ soil grown plants when they achieve optimum nutrient
levels, ɑlthough, morе time needs to be spend maintaining the plants ɑnd nutrient solutions.
In hydroponics, Ьecause tһе nutrient solutgion can bee controlled, you cann control thee growth
оf pkants so they grow less leafy foliage, and more profuse flower buds.
Τhe nutrient control ɑllows yⲟu to grow plants faster and bbe ready
fⲟr harvest sooner tһan plants grown in soil.

Hydroponics 101 ᴡouldn’t bee complette ԝithout telling you ѡһаt yoou need to get stɑrted with hydroponics.

Ϝirst, you need to choose yߋur method oof growing –
deep water culture аnd ebbb аnd flow ɑre common. You will
alsߋ need grow lights, of which thsre ɑre mqny
options tо choose frߋm. Tһere arе metal halide and fluorescent lights tһat can bе
used fоr cloning and vegetative grrowth stages, ɑnd һigh pressure sodium lights forr tһe flowering
stage. LED grow lights are alseo being useԁ morе and more for alⅼ stages
ߋf growth. Іf HIᎠ grow lights ljke metal halide ɑnd һigh pressure soddium аre used, youu muѕt consider tһe heat they generate which
mɑkes cooling and ventilation systems neϲessary.

Those are the basics of what you need to get ѕtarted ᴡith hydroponics – a method tօ distribute the
nutrient solution, ѕome grow lights, ɑnd ventilation. Fгom there, systems ϲan get moгe and more complicated аnd automated
dependig оn what tһe grower ԝants.

hydroponics iis a method οf growing plants ԝithout soil ƅy usіng mineral аnd nutrient solutions
in water. Plants mɑy ƅe grown withh theіr
roots iin the Hydroponics 101 solution օnly or in a medium.

  26. Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair
Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull
out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper
(especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy
in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island
in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained
a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family,
including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle
    designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who
recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light
blue button-down in a snap for Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand
Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair
Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club
    in London last year.

A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for

a timeless investment. If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana is a little out of your

For the star-studded affair located at the Academy Museum of
Motion Pictures, Rooney, 39, joined her dashing husband Joaquin, 49.

The couple – who ‘secretly wed’ recently – looked happier
than ever as they posed for sweet snaps on the carpet.

Rooney looked out of this world as she slipped into a floral sheer dress and flashed her
    underwear underneath.

The glitzy gala had no shortage of A-list star
power as they were also joined by the likes of supermodel Kendall Jenner as
well as fan-favorite actress and newly minted billionaire Selena Gomez.

Joaquin Phoenix’s, 49, wife Rooney Mara, 39, blushed as he fixed her
dress on the red carpet at Academy Museum Gala in LA on Saturday

Rooney and Joaquin shared a sweet red carpet moment

Joaquin just confirmed Rooney (born Patricia) was his ‘wife’ during an episode of Sam Fragaso’s podcast Talk
    Easy, last month.

Mara welcomed their second child in June, and she dressed her post-baby
    body gorgeous sheer gown.

Phoenix (born Bottom) and the two-time Oscar nominee are also parents of four-year-old son River Mara Phoenix named after Joaquin’s big brother who
died, age 23, from an overdose of morphine and cocaine on Halloween 1993.

‘I love it. I love it so much. I think it’s the
best thing in the world,’ Rooney gushed of motherhood on the
    LaunchLeft Podcast last year.

‘It doesn’t feel like a two-actor house because I didn’t work for the first three and a half years
    we were together.

Basically since we’ve been together, I only worked one or
two times and one was really small and short. It feels like a creative household,
we’re constantly talking about creative things.’

The Phoenixes originally met in 2012 playing lovers
Theodore Twombly and Catherine Klausen on the LA set of Spike Jonze’s AI rom-com Her, but
they didn’t start dating until after her 2016 split from her
    Discovery director Charlie McDowell.

The acting couple went on to co-star in Garth Davis’ 2018
Biblical drama Mary Magdalene and Gus Van Sant’s 2018

Deadline projected the 138-minute demented jukebox musical to

It also features Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine

  30. All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks he took from the airline.

Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership
positions show commissioners are all part
of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only by
    the Qantas chair.

This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing
    with Qantas matters.

If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas
CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new
book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code
of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’

Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023, as did
the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour
declared their membership in February 2024, which means it was after the NACC began operation in July
    2023.

An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner,
three deputy commissioners and CEO are members of the
    Chairman’s lounge.

‘This does not impact the integrity of the Commission,’ the
    spokesman said.

‘Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations
in regards to Chairman’s lounge membership in the NACC Gifts and Benefits register.

‘Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission’s jurisdiction.’

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley have
said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the NACC
over 22 upgrades and extra Chairman’s Lounge memberships received from Qantas.

An insight into the type of service offered by the Chairman’s Lounges was offered by a job ad posted on employment site Indeed for the one
    at Canberra Airport.

The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that Qantas contracts to run the lounges, stated they
were seeking ‘a highly motivated Food & Beverage Attendant to join our experienced and professional Front of House team’.

‘This role is based within the Chairman’s Lounge, a small fine dining restaurant and lounge area that offers an a la carte menu designed by
Neil Perry Consulting,’ the ad states.

‘Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and
efficient food and beverage offerings that meets our passengers’ expectations.’

Lounge sets out the requirements to serve the high and mighty

Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven- day
    rotating roster.

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from
Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial
    Review columnist Joe Aston.

Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary
jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that
only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and
included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’
Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the company chairman, with
the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ¿the most exclusive club in the country¿ and comes with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers,
state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders
of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities,
major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra,
Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings,
wool carpet and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines.

Wine bottles are often given as departing gift

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is to board and your

  31. Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted
nothing to do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop
film, a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019
billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire
hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by critics
and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process
telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the
making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from
the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about
some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence
of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score
of 31% and a critic score of 32%

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix

    box office

A DC spokesman said Gunn was directing the Max series Peacemaker in Atlanta, which had lost a day of production due
to Hurricane Helene, while Safran was sick.

Joker: Folie À Deux is branded ‘bleak’ and the ‘most disappointing
    follow-up’ by critics

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel.
while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy
rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before
production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for
the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
    movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was
‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around
    20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget
    remaining static.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling
Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of
the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month

A Warner spokesman told the publication the
studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film
at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed
back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the
decision to bring the film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the
film bombed at the box office on opening night.

It has only made $114million worldwide against its
    $200million budget.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released
in theaters on Friday, October 4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office,
    per The Hollywood Reporter.

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film,
while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel
    (Harley Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest
score for a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and
also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score
    with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at
the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend,
    per The Hollywood Reporter.

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around
$70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped.

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and
eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However,
the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200
    million.

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics
and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during
the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal
of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get
through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and
pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions on the sequel,
    which features musical sequences.

One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this. what happened
to the script?’ while another added, ‘is it that bad,’ followed by a crying face emoji.

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well,
could have been a good choice. It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed.

‘But with some original songs, that keep everything
vague, not just covers. Also when I heard of the ending I snorted fr.’

A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the
    original wasn’t a musical.’

‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and decided to randomly add musical scenes to fill the runtime,’ one penned.

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another shared, along with a monkey staring out a window.

One fan said, ‘the movie sucks. i had to walk out of the cinema,’ while another penned, ‘After years of disagreement….*Joker 2 releases* Critics [shaking hands] Audience.’

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday
    – and shared their opinions over the sequel, which was
    also a musical

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.
It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another
shared, along with a monkey staring out a window

‘That’s way below what we expected,’ one wrote in regards to the current Rotten Tomatoes scores.
‘People are saying this is the worst sequel ever.’

A fan explained, ‘yea this film was bad. it was pretentious
and dull. has the aesthetic of an arthouse film
    without the substance.’

‘It also insults the audience’s intelligence. the songs were also underwhelming too.
they shouldn’t have let this escape to theaters.’

One shared, ‘The audience that loved the first movie is not the same audience
running to see musicals. This was a gigantic mistake from step 1.’

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a
    movie centered around Gaga’s character.

‘It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel
like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.’

Ahead of the movie’s release, Lady Gaga also dropped an accompanying album titled Harlequin on September 27.

Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning
movie’ by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the
film following its release on Friday.

‘That’s way below what we expected,’ one wrote in regards to the current Rotten Tomatoes scores.
‘People are saying this is the worst sequel ever’

A fan explained, ‘yea this film was bad. it was pretentious and dull.

has the aesthetic of an arthouse film without the substance’

The ‘bleak’ sequel, has also received a tepid reception from fans, with some claiming Lady Gaga’s career could be at risk.

While the same director Todd Phillips was back
in the hot seat, critics have said the sequel
is just a ‘repeat’ of the first hit but with an added musical twist.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and
claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie
À Deux didn’t live up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and
‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill.

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is
best remembered as one of the most subversive
and original films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga
worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared
to have no idea what to do with her.

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by
critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’
role in the film following its release on Friday; seen in September in London

The Times’ Kevin Maher wrote: ‘The director Todd Phillips said there would be no follow-up to the original, but he changed his mind and
the result is a derivative musical’

‘This might be the most disappointing follow-up to an Oscar-winning performance since Anthony Hopkins reworked his silky and terrifying
Dr Lecter from for the campy, kitschy.’

Along with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, other stars that had appeared
in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

Joker: Folie à Deux has faced additional backlash from fans
as they have claimed that Gaga is running the risk of losing her acting career.

  40. Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, is
standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what looks like a small sponge floating in murky water.

‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.

(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’, which
is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha.
I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes weeks to develop and
is in fact a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s zip.
At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly
looks 20 years younger. Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000
Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her skin is,
but in person she is fizzing with energy, too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which
time she has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine years her junior, have…
    well, deflated.

Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right,
and Beatrice Aidin met back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks, morning to night, to
see just how much I, too, can turn back the clock.

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’ in a flower bed in my pyjamas like
her, and even tape up my mouth à la Liz. From my gut
to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow
the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book A Better Second Half:
Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly
became a bestseller on its release this year.

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.

‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my
50s than I was in my 40s, so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’

Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second
marriage, and the divorce she went through in 2020,
she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were
both beauty journalists. At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water.

‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety,
a not-unrelated financial crisis and severe sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I have dark circles under my eyes.
Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve been turning rather too readily to
the sauvignon blanc to help me nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb
    heavier than I should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as
young as she looks? More to the point – can I really
stick to it, kombucha and all?

‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…

Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the gym.
Beatrice needs extra help with exercise because of her sciatica

Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning she’s a fan of
lots of foods I love but didn’t think I should eat: butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality cheese,
    taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,’
    she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around
11am and dinner at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because eating
protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show four to five
cups is ‘strongly associated with living longer’
thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such as chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake of spermidine –
a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy,
which de-ages us at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine
or tequila, but never more than two and never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and start cooking
from scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the protein part of each meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start
to brew my own using Liz’s Scoby. But homemade kimchi – fermented veg
    – is a harder sell. When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike so much,
I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine has gone to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats, lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the long term than a
high-intensity gym session once a week or a long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael
Garry, who delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance over 5k
can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.

If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time, not
    increasing your distance.

At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica, and then he devises a daily regime for me.

I try press-ups and make it to three. Mortifying.

Perseverance is clearly key. As are weights, especially in your 50s.

‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and
hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands.
I try tricep dips off a chair, and quickly find I can increase my reps – until by week
four I’m doing two sets of 15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes 40 minutes but the more
I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching,
    press-ups, weights – takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to
compete with myself, speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel, which is sluggish and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ –
the specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences
how our body uses oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes
improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues around the body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies more
    effectively.

The best way to support your estrobolome
is by eating fibre from veg, seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples,
berries and plums. Back to the supermarket I go.

To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of icy cold water,
resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot
shower and feel not happy but mutinous as I step out of the bathroom
    shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass.
‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of the Earth to transmit deep into the body,
‘where they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.
I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas, and feel, well, very self-conscious.
Later I graduate to the park, and – look away now – tread in dog mess,
which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.

‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune
    system,’ she says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to smile about than me but, following instructions,
I write down three things I am grateful for every morning,
and every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another
(longer) list of ‘things that are concerning me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise
what’s important and what’s not. It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I thought.
Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find my journal
and am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am…
    and occasionally edging towards 10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her
routine, which means setting an evening alarm for 9pm –
to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed
book or a podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before
bed (and stops eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she
sleeps with an open window, which she covers with blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles
her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock.
The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray my pillows with C.
    Atherley Geranium Spray instead.

Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers the kombucha.
Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said to promote more restful sleep.

All of this is time-consuming and takes practise,
but I find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
    How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests a glass of
wine, which turns into a bottle. And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and
find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for two months
    – you jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into your upper arm, and then link
it to an app on your phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge
slump, which makes me tired and irritable. Who knew
that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in, eat too much cake and drink too much tequila,’ she says.

‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it right.
It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting
what I was so worried about day by day, my perspective on it
    changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the start of this project and
    how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because
change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.

Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this before.
He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb
and taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist and
11 in off my body as a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the measly 3kg weights are now 6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming out again this
    party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s
    causing your aches

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost
gone and I can come off strong painkillers. I
know sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the timing is surely no
coincidence. All those exercises have strengthened the muscles
around my spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see
a difference. ‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil.
‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably. Though Liz
is known for her candour, so it’s not a given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough
and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut
    to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to
her, which is one of the key lessons I’ve learned.
    Gratitude makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to love) and the odd tequila
    – are the habits I’ll hold on to. But not (shudder!) the
    kimchi or flower beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I
    can do it, anyone can.

A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier,

The singer, whose hits include Bad Romance, Born This Way, Just Dance and Poker Face,
is headed back to her pop persona following the September release of her album Harlequin, which was inspired by her film,
    Joker: Folie à Deux.

Among the tracks on the album included two new songs, and standards such as That’s
Entertainment, That’s Life and Get Happy.

Like the film, it was not an initial commercial success, marking her
lowest ever entry for a full-length record on the Billboard 200 charts at number 20.

Joker: Folie à Deux saw Lady Gaga play Harley
Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, who earned the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the franchise’s 2019 film

But the sequel was critically panned and became a huge flop,
with it being reported it ‘could potentially lose $150 to $200 million’ despite studio insiders saying it would break even.

Lady Gaga has had some commercial success in recent months with her pairing with Bruno Mars on Die
With a Smile, which was released in August, landing in the third spot on Billboard’s Hot 100.

In 2020, she put out the studio album Chromatica, which initially
landed in the top spot upon its debut and included the hit single Rain on Me, a collaboration with Ariana

tour – two years after her last tour, The Chromatica Ball.

The pop superstar, 38, is preparing to release her

However, a Live Nation spokesperson confirmed: ‘There is no 2025 tour planned.’

The Sun reports that Lady Gaga will instead tour in 2026.

It comes as the hitmaker is set to release her new song Disease on Friday, as the first single from her forthcoming seventh album.

Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday said it
would be filing a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United States for its IQOS ILUMA product in October.

The company at its investor day said that while the
PMTA timeline remains “hard to predict”, it expects the launch of the ILUMA heated tobacco units towards the second half
of its three-year forecast period of 2024 to 2026.

IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not
burn them, a process the company says potentially results in fewer health risks than traditional smoking

A PMTA is required to sell new tobacco products in the United
States, with manufacturers required to provide scientific data demonstrating a product is
appropriate for the protection of public health.

  46. Terrifier 3 star David Howard Thornton has broken his silence on the low-budget horror film demolishing $200m flop Joker: Folie à Deux at the
    box office.

The grisly film – made for about $2 million – stars Thornton as homicidal clown Art who brutally murders an array of victims
in stomach churning scenes – with the film knocking the
starry Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga film off the top of the
    US box office last week.

Thornton said the runaway success of his film had left him stunned as he likened to battle of
the two films to ‘David vs Goliath.’

He told TMZ: ‘Terrifier 3 was a small lower budget
independent film… I never expected this to happen in my life, I’m floored and grateful for
    it all.

‘We’re grateful to the fans, we have a dedicated fanbase, we weren’t beholden to the studio system.

Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ

‘This shows Hollywood that we need to start making movies that
    take risks again.

The star said he had yet to see the panned Joker sequel, saying:
‘I was shocked too as the first Joker film I loved,
I’m curious to see why people aren’t as crazy about the
    second one.’

Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood fest, which has
received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.

The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.

Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office
competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad reviews,
enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.

The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite
of being in more than four thousand theaters across the US.

Thornton said the runaway success of his film had left him
stunned as he likened to battle of the two films to ‘David vs
    Goliath’ – pictured last week

He said: ‘Terrifier 3 was a small lower budget independent film…
I never expected this to happen in my life, I’m floored and grateful for it all’

The musical is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to
    the publication.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to
produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break
even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any
estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported
    as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s
opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue
throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

The film is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according
    to the publication

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2
million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a
surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed
to ignite at the box office.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box
    office on opening night.

Convulsing she then awakens and opens her eyes to begin singing.
She then climbs up the car to look at the driver who is dressed as a terrifying
    character in leather look.

She then jumps off the car before engaging in a savage fight with another version of herself.

The next scene then cuts to her chained up in the dark wearing
white underwear and covered in scars as she stands on top of yet
    another version of herself.

She then wraps her legs around the other Lady Gaga to try and strangle her as the tension intensifies.

The scary leather clad character from earlier is then seen vomiting
black liquid next to another Lady Gaga who is lying on the crown.

She is then seen trying to escape the chaos as she gets trapped between two closing walls that
    eventually crush her to death.

It comes as Lady Gaga, 38, revealed she was ‘overwhelmed’
by her Little Monsters’ reaction to her latest tune Disease.

The pop superstar said she feels ‘insane joy’ about her fandom’s response to her electro-pop banger – and teased that there is ‘a LOT more to come’.

  49. Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out
from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday
(specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of
Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe
staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate
Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different
    Fair Isle designs.

    Kensington Palace

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest
by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white,
straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at
private members’ club in London last year.

A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a
timeless investment. If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree
from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council.

Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single peppermint tree growing
in the middle of their driveway.

The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay
    for $20.1million in August.

They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the
grounds the tree was not dead or deceased.

‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say
that the tree placement is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court
    previously told a council meeting.

‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite
    tricky to reverse out.’

The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be
removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.

They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property.

Paul Holmes a Court (pictured) is the son of Australia’s first billionaire, famed tycoon Robert
Holmes a Court, who died suddenly of heart failure at the age of 53

Paul Holmes à Court and his wife Zara won a council
battle to remove a peppermint tree (pictured) from the driveway of their
    $20million mansion

Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s odd placement
also made it difficult to spot cars turning
the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View
    Terrace.

After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a ‘good outcome’.

‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but also matches
the council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge of that
    property,’ he said.

Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any
mature trees on private property without council approval.

Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would ‘take a common sense approach’ to
    the issue.

‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to
issues,’ Mr Carey told the West Australian.

‘And I understand people are passionate about trees. But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic
    outcomes.’

According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion –
which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River – the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.

The Holmes à Court property was built in around 1904 in Federation ‘Arts and
    Crafts’ style

The home boast an unparalleled view of the Swan River overlooking Fresh Water Bay

‘Designed in the rare Federation ‘Arts and Crafts’ style, the home has retained all its elegance and splendour via lofty ceilings, sweeping verandas, charming decorative
arches, casement-style sash windows, and walls of French doors that bathe the home in light, reflecting river views
    beyond,’ the listing said.

The property also features ‘Plush Champagne-hued carpets’
and ‘cobble-stoned remote garage to accommodate six cars,
abundant storage, gym area, double vanity rain-shower bathroom and climate-controlled
    wine cellar.’

Mr Holmes a Court is the chief executive of prize-winning wine label Vasse
Felix and the brother of Peter Holmes à Court, who once jointly
owned of the South Sydney Rabbitohs with Russell Crowe, and climate philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court.

  51. The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich
customers already securing a spot on the waiting list.

Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and
only those with the deepest pockets can hope to afford one of
    the lavish pads.

The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be an eye-watering £35million – around 70 times the average cost of
    a house in the capital.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous
record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of billionaires
and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest in making
    a purchase at the scheme.

There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property including lateral
apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’
    apartments.

The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say even the
most modest property will start with a guide price exceeded
by only a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods.

The average price of all 29 units – which cover
300,000 sq ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property value of around £500,000,
and 130 times the national average price of £268,000
revealed in today’s Nationwide house price survey for November.

The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to make
room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as a
    car park.

The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and
practice RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible for the creation of the basement substructure
    and superstructure.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build the scheme will easily surpass London’s

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers Phones 4u – attended the topping out of 1
Mayfair alongside senior members of the construction team.

The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of 79 at roof level, being put into place on the
top of the nine-storey main apartment building.

No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will feature a ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with
a double height ceiling and 18ft high French windows overlooking the garden.

There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces of cut glass, a library and a
garden gallery, with seating areas opening directly
    onto the central courtyard garden.

Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday said it would be filing a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA)
in the United States for its IQOS ILUMA product in October.

The company at its investor day said that while the
PMTA timeline remains “hard to predict”, it expects the
launch of the ILUMA heated tobacco units towards the second
half of its three-year forecast period of 2024 to 2026.

IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them, a
process the company says potentially results in fewer health risks than traditional smoking

A PMTA is required to sell new tobacco products in the United States, with manufacturers required to
provide scientific data demonstrating a product is appropriate for the protection of public health.

  56. House prices in England have increased twice as fast as income since
2000 with the average home in London ‘unaffordable’ for even Britain’s highest earners.

The damning report from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) astonishingly found that only the richest 10pc of households can afford
to buy a home with less than five years of household income in the year to
    March 2023.

The average annual disposable income was at £35,000 during
that period with the average cost of a home in England at £298,000, a
ratio of 8.6 the ONS said.

For those in the poorest households, the
average priced property in England was equivalent to 18.2 times above average income.

While the price of the average home in the capital was staggeringly deemed to be ‘unaffordable’ for every income group.

It compared to 5.8 in Wales, 5.6 in Scotland, and 5.0 in Northern Ireland.

ONS says it defines properties costing more than five years of income
    as ‘unaffordable’.

It lays bare the housing crisis gripping the nation as premier Sir Keir Starmer vowed to bulldoze the
objections of local people to get hundreds of thousands of new homes built across Britain.

House prices in England have increased twice as fast as income since
2000 with the average home in London ‘unaffordable’ even for Britain’s highest earners

Chris Curtis MP, Co-Chair of the Labour Growth Group and member of the Housing Select Committee, said the figures ‘demonstrate the staggering scale of our country’s housing crisis and underline the
urgency of the task facing this Government to end it’.

‘It is quite frankly shameful that house prices have risen at double the rate of household incomes over the past 20 years,’ he said.

Keir Starmer vows to bulldoze ‘Nimby’ objections to housebuilding led by ‘blockers
    and bureaucrats’

‘To halt this trend we need grow our economy so that rising pay-packets mean it’s not just the privileged few
who can afford to get on the housing ladder.

‘Alongside this we need to be truly radical in reforming
the broken planning system and explore innovative solutions to crowd private investment into
building more affordable and social housing.’

Sir Kier said on Friday that the UK was being ‘held to ransom
by blockers and bureaucrats’ to unleash a surge in construction.

Writing in the Times he said that Nimbys were ‘suffocating the aspirations of working
families and obscuring the future of our country’.

As well as blocking housing he also attacked blocks on vital infrastructure to go with them, including roads, electricity pylons and
    reservoirs.

The PM sounded a warning to English councils yesterday that he would not be afraid to ‘step in’ if local leaders ‘dodge their responsibilities’ in approving plans
to build new homes in their region.

Writing in the Times he said that Nimbys were ‘suffocating the aspirations of working families and obscuring the future of our
    country’

‘But where local leaders dodge their responsibilities for deciding
where and how homes should be built, and needlessly oppose developments that would provide good homes,
we won’t be afraid to step in,’ he wrote in The Observer.

Rayner vs the Nimbys: Deputy PM to ‘streamline’ rules to
build 1.5m homes – and sideline locals

    ‘More powers, more responsibilities.’

But he is facing kickback from local councils, including those
run by Labour, who say a target of 1.5million new homes by 2029 – 300,000 per year –
set by Housing Secretary Angela Rayner is ‘unrealistic’.

Yvonne Gagen, the Labour leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme its target had
been upped from 166,000 news homes to 605,000.

‘The targets are unrealistic and we will really, really struggle to
    deliver that,’ she said.

‘I really do feel that the government should start listening to the vast majority of councils.
I feel that we are going to be on a collision course with Labour and
it is not just Labour councils, it is Liberal Democrats, it is Conservatives, they have all said them same thing.’

Writing in the Times, Sir Keir said: ‘Britain is in the grip of the worst housing crisis in living memory.

Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has vowed to ‘streamline’ planning rules for new homes in order to thwart local councils and other ‘Not In My Back Yard’ protests from locals

‘For too long, the country has been held to ransom by the blockers and
bureaucrats who have stopped the country building, choked off growth and driven prices through the roof.

‘They’re suffocating the aspirations of working families and obscuring the future of our country.
    Those days are over…

‘Generations before us built the infrastructure the entire nation was proud of
    — from civic buildings to train stations, hospitals to schools.

‘So we will introduce a new golden era of building.
That’s why we’re fast-tracking 150 planning decisions on major infrastructure by the end of
parliament, more than double those decided in the previous parliament.

‘We’ll build the schools, the hospitals, the railways and
roads, the towns and villages, that will shape our national landscape for
years to come and fuel growth in every region and nation.’

His Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary Angela
Rayner has vowed to go to war with Nimbys saying the UK needed to build homes
on a scale not seen since the 1950s.

Ms Rayner vowed to ‘streamline’ planning rules for new homes in order to thwart local councils and other ‘Not
In My Back Yard’ protests from locals.

And she warned that too many people are being priced out of
having a family home and that radical action is needed to increase the supply.

  63. There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl Inn.
Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is well kept and a huge leather
sofa sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining
room, solid and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with
cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

Stornoway black pudding with crispy egg and bubble
and squeak: ‘pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis’, is Tom’s verdict

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and
the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show; also
chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously
rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one
of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.

A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both
light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding
with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way
    of Lewis.

There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump
breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side
of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage
spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of
lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of
gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of
    pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet
(this part of the Lake District is famed for
its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal,
served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of
sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the
sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too
    rare to be rushed.

About £45 per head. The Punch Bowl Inn, Crosthwaite, Cumbria; the-punchbowl.co.uk
