In a significant development for India’s higher defence management, the Government of India has appointed Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani (Retd), PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs (DMA). The appointment takes effect from the date he assumes charge and will continue until further orders.

Lt Gen Subramani succeeds General Anil Chauhan, whose extended tenure as CDS concludes on May 30, 2026. General Chauhan has held the position since September 2022, providing steady leadership during a period of evolving regional security dynamics.

Currently serving as Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025, Lt Gen Subramani brings a wealth of operational, command, and strategic experience to the role. He previously served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025 and as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.

Commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, the officer is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He holds a Master’s degree from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from the University of Madras. His career spans nearly four decades, marked by command of units in counter-insurgency operations, including Operation Rhino in Assam, and leadership across diverse terrains from the Northern borders to the Northeast.

The Chief of Defence Staff position, established in 2019 following recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee and subsequent reforms, represents a landmark step toward jointness and integration among the three services. Gen Bipin Rawat, a decorated officer with extensive operational experience, became India’s first CDS on January 1, 2020. Tragically, he was martyred in a helicopter crash in December 2021. The post was later revived with the appointment of Gen Anil Chauhan.

As the principal military adviser to the Defence Minister on tri-service matters, the CDS functions as the Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. The role involves heading the Department of Military Affairs, promoting synergy in procurement, doctrine, training, and logistics, while overseeing tri-service commands and agencies. Importantly, the CDS does not exercise direct operational command over the services, maintaining the distinct operational autonomy of the Army, Navy, and Air Force chiefs while driving long-term integration efforts.

Lt Gen Subramani’s appointment comes at a time when India continues to modernise its armed forces amid complex geopolitical challenges. Defence analysts view his extensive command experience and strategic acumen as assets that will further advance the vision of theatre commands and enhanced joint capabilities.

Defence Chronicle extends its congratulations to Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani on this prestigious appointment and wishes him success in steering India’s defence architecture toward greater cohesion and operational effectiveness.
